Ayse Irem Kirac is a doctoral research student of the collaborative 'Globalisation and Legal Theory' PhD programme at the University of Antwerp. She is working on a PhD project about the democratic deficit of the global law-making process under the supervision of Prof. Alexia Herwig and Prof. George Pavlakos. Her study strives to explain the problem of the lack of democratic legitimacy in global law-making mechanisms and global regulations.
Irem holds a LL.B. degree from Istanbul University, Faculty of Law (Turkey) and a LL.M. degree from Georgetown University Law Center (USA). As a lawyer, she is a registered member of the Istanbul Bar Association since 2010.
