July 12-13th: Conference on the Cosmopolitan Conditions for Legitimate Sovereignty
The conference on the "Cosmopolitan Conditions for Legitimate Sovereignty" aims at scrutinizing the thesis that international law and international politics purport to provide the external conditions under which claims to state sovereignty can be legitimate. The question emerging thereof concerns the precise content of these conditions. Against this theoretical background, discussion will revolve around questions of global distributive justice, human rights protection as well as the problem of justice-relevant externalities introduced by national politics. The aspirational componnet of this debate aims at clarifying the ensuing implications for the structure of a global order that can convincingly determine the conditions and limits of legitimate state sovereignty.
This conference constitutes the second part of a conference series organized by Professor Mattias Kumm and the Rule of Law Center (WZB Berlin) and Professor George Pavlakos and the Centre for Law and Cosmopolitan Values (University of Antwerp).
